Scenic Gateway Project , Marion County, FDOT District 5

This District 5 project consisted of the beautification of medians the interchange locations of I-75 and SR 200, US 27 and SR 40 in the city of Ocala. The beautification process involved landscape, irrigation, decorative signs and ironwork maintenance of traffic and jack and bore operations. Jim served as the project manager for this project.

Jacksonville/Baldwin Railtrail, Duval County, FDOT District 2

This District Two Enhancement Project consisted of converting an existing abandoned railroad bed into an equestrian/bicycle trail. The project was approximately 16 miles in length and meanders through existing wetlands. The project contains several major creek crossings which involved the preparation of Location Hydraulic Reports. Jim served as a highway engineer for this District Two Enhancement Project.

Confederate Park, City of Jacksonville, FDOT District 2

Confederate Park is an historic park located in the City of Jacksonville. The project (District Two Enhancement) involved the addition of landscaping and lighting to enhance the existing features. Features include walks, statues, fountains, lighting, landscaping and fencing. Jim served as highway engineer for this project and was responsible for in-house management and production of plans.

Orange Street, City of Starke, FDOT District 2

Jim served as highway engineer for this project located in the City of Starke. The project consisted of the design of 2.94 kilometers of sidewalk located in an existing residential neighborhood. Paved driveways, drainage pipes, ditch regrading, curbing and flumes were included to provide for sidewalk construction within the existing right-of-way.

CR 232/Millhopper Road, Alachua County

Jim served as highway engineer for this project for Alachua County Public Works. This project was a Scenic Roadway involving the widening of existing traffic lanes along an existing two-lane rural roadway from 2.74 m.(+/-) to 3.66 m. lanes. The project was 4.02 kilometers in length with 1.61 kilometers of the roadway within the scenic portion. The width of the corridor through the scenic portion was very narrow with minimum existing swales. Several curves throughout the project did not meet today’s standards and were realigned. Every effort was made to minimize the impacts to existing trees. In addition to widening the existing lanes to 3.66 m., a 1.22 m. paved bicycle lane was provided. This made design of the swales very difficult since trees were to remain. Many meetings with residents along the corridor were held to insure that their concerns were being met.

Rosalind Ave/Southern Gateway, City of Orlando

Jim served as highway engineer and was responsible for plans preparation for this project. The Southern Gateway Project involved the realignment of Orange Avenue/Magnolia Avenue into Rosalind Avenue as the southern entrance into Downtown Orlando. The realignment impacted the Cherokee National Register Historic District, Lake Lucerne and the East-West Expressway. Extensive Public Involvement for this high profile project included coordination with the Downtown Redevelopment Agency (DRA), Historic Preservation Board, Cherokee Historic District Neighborhood, Orlando/Orange County Expressway, the Florida Department of Transportation, the Mayor's Office and Orlando City Commission and the general public. The final product produced through the public involvement process included a 82.30 meter historically sensitive bridge (i.e. iron work railing, bridge pavers, period street lighting), extensive streetscaping and a three lane northbound typical section. A detailed public involvement program was prepared which included "laser imagery" to show all involved agencies and the general public how the final improvements would appear. The facility has been constructed and is now open to traffic.

Other pertinent highway projects for which Jim has been responsible include the following:
  • Sidewalk Plans for Colley Road, City of Starke, FDOT District 2
  • Sidewalk Plans for Old Lawtey Road, City of Starke, FDOT District 2
