Millhopper Road was designated
as a Scenic Roadway by the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners
prior to the widening and resurfacing project design by our
firm in 1991 and 1992. The project design incorporated sidewalks,
bicycle facilities and landscaping design. Since Alachua County
has one of the most restrictive tree ordinances in the state,
a total of 1728 trees were surveyed, identified and rated as
to life expectancy. Roadway and sidewalk improvements were designed
to minimize the impacts to these trees. Detailed landscaping
and tree replacement plans were developed to mitigate the loss
of trees that could not be saved. An extensive Public Involvement
Plan was developed to address neighborhood concerns over the
impacts of the project. The project was successfully completed
and received much public recognition as a model for future projects
of this type in Alachua County.
Our Millhopper Road Project was recognized by the City
of Gainesville Beautification Board in 1996 with a 1st
Place Award for Innovative Design. |
