Approximately 1.2 miles (1.9 km)
of sidewalk was constructed for the SR 24 project in the City
of Bronson in Levy County. Unlike other, more urban projects
there was plenty of room to construct the sidewalk.
A minimum of 23 feet (7.0 meters) was available to construct
the sidewalk. Swale relocation was not necessary. The sidewalk
was constructed to connect the commercial and residential district
in Bronson with the Bronson Elementary School. The sidewalk
was constructed a minimum of 8 feet (2.4 meters) from the travel
lane and further away when possible. Since the roadway running
speeds are higher for this roadway segment we kept the pedestrian
traffic as far away from the travel lanes as possible.
Since ample right-of-way for the sidewalk construction existed,
drainage swale reconstruction was not necessary.
Landscaping and lighting were added
to the street perimeters as shown in the following two before
and after photographs:

Left roadway prior to construction.
Same section after construction;
modification of the swale system was not necessary.
